Aswan City Tour by Horse Carriage with Nile Corniche

Duration

Aswan is the most relaxed city on the Nile, and the best way to feel it is slowly, from the seat of a horse-drawn carriage. This private tour rolls through the old streets and along the waterfront, with an Egyptologist guide to explain what you pass.

You see the El-Tabia Mosque and also the Coptic Orthodox cathedral, which stand a short distance apart and show how Muslim and Christian communities have lived side by side in the city. Along the Nile Corniche the carriage passes the historic Old Cataract Hotel, a grand Victorian-era building above the river.

The ride ends with a break at a local cafe, where tea or coffee is served. Then you are taken back to your hotel or Nile cruise boat.

The tour is short and gentle, so it suits couples, families and travelers who want an easy introduction to Aswan before or after the big temple days. It is also a pleasant way to spend a late afternoon, when the light on the river softens and the corniche comes alive.

Horse carriage ride through Aswan: El-Tabia Mosque, cathedral and the Corniche

Your guide meets you at your Aswan hotel or Nile cruise boat and brings you to the carriage on the riverside. Settle in for a relaxed ride through the city center; you stay in the carriage for most of the tour, so there is little walking.

Your first sights are the Coptic Orthodox cathedral and the El-Tabia Mosque, where the guide tells you about the communities who worship there and everyday life in Aswan. Then the carriage winds through the old streets and out onto the Nile Corniche, with views of the river and feluccas. You pass the Old Cataract Hotel, opened in 1899 on a granite rock above the water.

Around the midpoint of the tour you stop at a local cafe for tea or coffee and a rest. Afterward you return to your hotel or cruise boat.

Questions

How long is the carriage ride?

The whole tour takes two to three hours, including the transfer from your hotel or cruise boat, the ride through the city and the cafe stop. Your guide keeps an easy pace, so there is time for photos and questions.

What is the best time of day for this tour?

Aswan is one of the hottest cities in Egypt, so late afternoon is the most comfortable time, especially in summer. In winter any time of day is pleasant. Tell us your preference when you book.

Do we get out of the carriage at the mosque and cathedral?

Most of the tour is seen from the carriage. Your guide may invite you to step down for a closer look where it is possible. Dress modestly if you plan to get out near a place of worship.

Is this tour suitable for people who find walking difficult?

Yes. Because you stay seated for most of the tour, it is one of the easiest ways to see Aswan. You only need to step up into the carriage. Tell us if anyone in your group needs extra help.
