Within a day's reach of Cairo, the desert holds a valley of fossil whales, a waterfall among the dunes and a lake that glitters like a mirage. This private 4x4 trip links them in one long, varied day for travelers who want to leave the city and the temples behind.

The main sight is Wadi El Hitan, known as the Valley of the Whales and listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Here you walk among skeletons of early whales about 40 million years old, left behind when this desert was part of a sea. Your guide explains how they lived, and why the site matters to scientists.

The route also takes in the lakes and waterfall of Wadi El Rayan, a drive over the dunes with a go at sandboarding, and Magic Lake. Lunch is served at a Bedouin-style camp before the long drive home.

The day suits active travelers, families with older children and anyone with an interest in natural history. Expect a bumpy off-road ride, so bring closed shoes, a hat and sunscreen.

Your itinerary

  1. 01

Wadi El Rayan, Wadi El Hitan, dunes, Magic Lake and Bedouin lunch

Your private 4x4 collects you from your hotel in Cairo or Giza in the early morning and heads south-west into the Fayoum depression, roughly two hours from the city. Your guide talks you through the landscape on the way.

The first stop is the lakes and waterfall of Wadi El Rayan, an unexpected sight among the sand. From there your driver takes the desert track to Wadi El Hitan, where the whale fossils lie. Walk the marked trail past fossil skeletons of early whales, preserved where they lay when the area was sea floor; allow about an hour and a half.

On the way back you drive over the dunes, try sandboarding and stop at Magic Lake. Lunch is a grilled meal at a Bedouin-style camp. Then enjoy the late-afternoon drive back to Cairo, arriving in the evening.

Questions

How long do we spend driving?

The drive from Cairo to the Fayoum area takes about two hours, and the desert tracks to Wadi El Hitan add more time. In total, expect several hours in the vehicle, with stops at each site, which is why the day lasts ten to twelve hours.

What will we see at Wadi El Hitan?

You follow a marked trail through an open-air area of fossil whale skeletons, with signs that explain what each find is. Your guide adds the story of how the whales evolved and how the valley became a World Heritage Site.

What should I wear and bring?

Bring closed, comfortable shoes, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Add a light layer for the early morning and the ride home, and a scarf for blowing sand. Keep your camera handy for the dunes.

Is the off-road ride rough?

Yes, the desert tracks are bumpy, and the 4x4 moves over sand and uneven ground. If you have back problems or get car sick easily, tell us when you book so we can talk through the day with you.

When is the best time of year to go?

From October to April the weather is mild and best for walking in the valley. In summer the desert gets very hot, so we plan an early start and keep the walks shorter. Ask us for advice on your travel dates.
